Debbie Hearle: Artist Biography
Debbie Hearle has been painting for over 30 years and classic sailing
yachts are the subjects of many of her signature works. In 1985 she established
THE HEARLE GALLERY in Chatham, MA, now celebrating its 23rd year. The artist's
work is represented in over 3,500 private and corporate collections throughout
the world.
The artist grew up sailing off City Island on Long Island Sound and
cruising with her family on "Dunlookin". The glee felt when sailing,
feet dangling off the bow of a Crosby cat is imbedded in her memory, the
feeling of blissful freedom never to be forgotten and evidenced in her work
today. Now living and working in Chatham, Cape Cod, Debbie and her husband,
Ron, sail "Kui Ipo", their Marshall 18, on Pleasant Bay and Nantucket
Sound. Son, Michael, at the helm of "Red Stripe", the family chase boat,
provides Debbie the golden opportunity to attend classic yachting races
throughout New England where she gathers inspiration for her marine paintings.
"When I'm painting, I'm sailing" says the artist. What could be better! During
the winter months, the family sails in the British Virgin Islands. Debbie
paints.
The artist is a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology
in N.Y.C. and her work has been exhibited in national juried exhibitions and
many regional shows including those at the Salmagundi Club, N.Y.C., the
National Arts Club Catherine Lorillard Wolf Exhibitions, the Hudson
Valley Art Association, The Cape Cod Museum of Art and the Cape
Cod Art Association. Debbie has taught both watercolor and oil painting at
her studio and various art associations in New York and Cape Cod. The artist
concentrates on plein art painting when not depicting classic races and she has
studied with master painters Joseph McGurl, William Davis and Don Demers. Most
recently Debbie's painting entitled "The Bull and the Bear" was selected
for the American Society of Marine Artists New England Regional Exhibition and
will be exhibited at the Herreshoff Maritime Museum/America's Cup Hall of
Fame in Bristol, RI, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine and
the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, Yarmouth, MA.
The artist also spends much of her time painting brilliant portraits of
children at the beach. She describes her "Beach Bum" portraits as a highlight
of her career. The paintings exude the artist's joy in her work. To create a
family heirloom capturing your favorite "Beach Bums" in oil or watercolor,
Debbie will photograph your children at the beach. Working from her photographs
the artist creates her exquisite "Beach Bum" portraits. That special moment in
time is captured in a lasting work of art.
Debbie is a Member of the International Society of Marine
Artists. The artist and her work have been featured in Cape Cod Life
Magazine, Chatham Magazine and Chatham Bars Inn Magazine.
Please call the gallery at (508) 945-2406 to speak to Debbie
regarding scheduling a portrait commission. The artist can complete a limited
number of portraits within the year.
